America’s Twin Deficits and the Dollar

Policy Paper “The Twin Deficit in the United States and the Weak Dollar”

Our new Policy Paper “The Twin Deficit in the United States and the Weak Dollar” can now be downloaded in Policy Papers.
It is the result of our latest workshop, at which German and American experts in academia, politics and media came together to discuss the US budget and balance of payments deficits.

In the Workshop, we discussed the following questions:

  • What are the causes of the budget and current-account deficits of the USA, and what is the likelihood, that they can be reduced in the short or intermediate term?
  • Can these deficits lead to a sudden devaluation of the dollar? How can we avoid a hard landing?
  • What would be the effects of a devaluation on the German and world economy?
  • How can we protect ourselves against these negative effects?
